Dartmouth Scenic Walk
Reply Quote

Last weekend my husband and I were in Dartmouth and noticed a lady walking her dog in the fields high up above the town.  We walked up through and out above the town along a delightful lane until we met a gentleman selling eggs by the roadside.  We asked him for directions and he showed us a path that led right around the headland with wonderful views over the River Dart.  We stopped for our picnic which we had hastily bought from a fantastic deli in the town and had a relaxing siesta on the grass.  The path then dropped down and brought us back via Dartmouth Castle.

Later I went to the local TIC and asked for a map of the route.  The lady said that it was a new one to her but she did give me another walk from Kingswear to Greenway.

Is anyone familiar with the route I took?  It was gorgeous!  I hope that I can find it again!

Dartmouth is great for walking because there are so many routes from the town.

At this time of year (ie May) Gallants Bower, which is the old Civil War fort above Dartmouth Castle, is an absolute mass of bluebells and absolutely gorgeous. Take the road that's signposted to the Castle, fork right after Warfleet creek and follow this road until it starts to climb towards Compass Cove Cottages. (If you get to the cottages you've gone too far). You pass a single cottage on the right, and several hundred yards further up there's a path off to the right which will take you into the woods and out onto Gallants Bower. Several paths lead from here, one of which will take you downhill and out to just below the little carpark you passed on the way up.

Hello Lamorna,

Thanks for your advice.  We did find Gallants Bower by climbing up the hill from the Castle teashop after breakfast last Saturday morning.  As you predicted, it was a wonderful experience - thank you for pointing us in the right direction.

Did anyone notice the almost solitary single white bluebell amidst the masses of blue ones?  And what fabulous views all around this area.  We will be doing more exploring soon.
