With the threat (in April at least) of a dry summer, we went out and bought a couple of big water butts (on special offer at Noyces in Kingsbridge), and ran a junction pipe from the gutter that served ours and our neighbour's kitchen roofs. At the first downpour after the dry spell both were full in less than half an hour and we had to fit a plastic square in the gutter junction so the water continued into the storm drain otherwise the butts would have overflowed into the flower beds.
It really brought home to me just how much free water we waste, and just how much we can save if we're geared up to it. All new houses should be built with rainwater storage tanks to flush the loos, for example. Why use drinking water when the stuff is out there for free?
