Lunar Eclipse March 3rd 2007
Reply Quote

Hi everyone,

Just thought I would put up a post to remind people about the lunar eclipse on the 3rd March. I've written an article for the March issue of Devon Life on the eclipse and the story of how Columbus used one to his advantage, so you'll have to read the magazine for the full story! :-) The March issue is out very soon, but here are a few key tips just as a refresher.

Locating the Moon (providing its clear) should be fairly easy as it's nice and bright and fairly large! :-) On the evening of Saturday March 3rd you should see the Moon rising in the East. At around 8:18pm GMT the eclipse will begin, when the Moon is fairly high, but do make sure you are clear of any buildings and tall trees for the best view. For the first (roughly) hour and a half the Moon slips into the Earth's outer (lighter) shadow, and the Moon will start to be eaten away (by the shadow) as it were. At about 9:30 the Moon moves into the darkest part of the Earth's shadow and the fun really begins. If we are lucky the Moon will go a wonderful coppery/red colour, much more striking than the colours we usually see when the Moon is down low. This phase of the eclipse will last until just before 12pm and then the Moon begins to move out of the Earth's shadow. Finally it will leave the Earth's shadow completely by about 2:24am on the 4th of March.

A lunar eclipse is a awesome thing to see and hopefully weather permitting we'll get to see it. Do tell me how you get on observing the eclipse (post your views on this thread), and I'll try and post up any pictures I get from my imaging equipment.

All the best and clear skies!

Will

Hi Will, Just picked up on this thread. Have been out onto Mount Pleasant Park in Plymouth tonight. What a glorious evening for a lunar eclipse, lovely and clear and so still too. managed to get a couple of good photos from a modest digital camera too! Hope you found the time to absorb some of the subtle orange light.

Regards, Marshall

Hi Marshall, excellent image! Glad you saw the eclipse.

Yes I managed to observe quite a few hours of the eclipse from start to the end of totality. I was clouded out by some high level haze and cloud in the end, but I did manage to shoot 97 images. I'll upload some of the best ones tomorrow once I have finished processing them.

All the best,
Will

(I have linked to the images so you can see them in full) Oddly they don't seem to open if you just click on them. They only way I can get them to open is to right click and open them in a new window.
