Lunar Eclipse March 3rd 2007

Hi everyone,
Just thought I would put up a post to remind people about the lunar eclipse on the 3rd March. I've written an article for the March issue of Devon Life on the eclipse and the story of how Columbus used one to his advantage, so you'll have to read the magazine for the full story! :-) The March issue is out very soon, but here are a few key tips just as a refresher.
Locating the Moon (providing its clear) should be fairly easy as it's nice and bright and fairly large! :-) On the evening of Saturday March 3rd you should see the Moon rising in the East. At around 8:18pm GMT the eclipse will begin, when the Moon is fairly high, but do make sure you are clear of any buildings and tall trees for the best view. For the first (roughly) hour and a half the Moon slips into the Earth's outer (lighter) shadow, and the Moon will start to be eaten away (by the shadow) as it were. At about 9:30 the Moon moves into the darkest part of the Earth's shadow and the fun really begins. If we are lucky the Moon will go a wonderful coppery/red colour, much more striking than the colours we usually see when the Moon is down low. This phase of the eclipse will last until just before 12pm and then the Moon begins to move out of the Earth's shadow. Finally it will leave the Earth's shadow completely by about 2:24am on the 4th of March.
A lunar eclipse is a awesome thing to see and hopefully weather permitting we'll get to see it. Do tell me how you get on observing the eclipse (post your views on this thread), and I'll try and post up any pictures I get from my imaging equipment.
All the best and clear skies!
Will
