Re: The French do it Better..

I have been going to France regularly for over three years.  Even though it is a remote place, almost all the local shops and supermarkets have stopped using plastic bags.  I will admit having got caught out lots of times and having to pour the contents of my trolly directly into the boot of my car and then get the laundry basket out to unload at the other end.  However, eventually I started remembering to take my reuseable bags and finally (rather like the swans of Wells who have learned to ring a bell to get fed), I made an association between going shopping and gathering up my bags.  Clever or what?

Now it seems madness to do anything else. And I feel better that I am not filling the place with horrid plastic.  It's really easy once you know how and I'd recommend it to anyone!

I always aim to take a reuseable bag with me when I go shopping, and sometimes just forget - and then guiltily take the supermarket bags anyway. If they weren't offered, I'd quickly get my act together - which is what happens in France, as Anna notes. The French have been re-educated. It would be easy for the Brits to be reeducated too.

It may be easy but it's not happening.  How can we make the supermarkets dispense with bags altogether?  Is it a question of waiting for government to stop talking hot air and actually do something meaningful?  The elimination of plastic bags in the UK would be a very significant and encouraging step forward in taking control of our destiny. People who care about our countryside must speak up against the scourge of the plastic bag in our society.

Hurrah for Modbury. The town traders have got rid of plastic bags altogether. You can buy a tough reusable bag, or they'll serve you stuff in biodegradable cornstarch bags or paper bags. If Modbury can do it, so can other places. Come on Devon shopkeepers - get your communal acts together
