I've asked my son, who seems to be an expert on these matters and it seems on the video and microwave, only the LED is operating, which uses very little power, and I agree with the bit about resetting the clock on the video, but the TV is different, surely, unless yous is very sophisticated. We don't have a clock on ours and just switch it off when we have finished watching it.
Re. clocks on microwaves, cookers and all the other appliances that modern manufacturers now deem it necessary to display the time. While they are useful for pre-setting ovens and washing machines for working mothers, at other times how much do we use them? The cooker clock is easy to set and I never use the one on the microwave. I prefer to think of the power I'm saving rather than the inconvenience.
The two other issues are electric lights and computers. I'm always trailing round after my children switching off the lights. They may scoff and say the bulb is burning only a small amount of power, but it all adds up. The same goes for computers. Ours are switched off at night and during the day if we are out.
We can also turn the heating down if we keep doors shut, another scoffing issue for the kids. By containing the heat in the main rooms you can have the setting a couple of degrees cooler as you don't need to have the hall blazing hot - but try telling young people this. If they had their way they would have the thermostat on full and walk around in beachwear!
By taking a little care, as well as saving the planet you're also saving money, an important issue now energy bills are so high. Even if we are lucky enough not to have to worry about a few extra pennies, we all know we can't go on burning fossil fuels forever without serious consequences, and as Tesco says, Every Little Bit Helps!
Best wishes,
Caroline
